Clopton Bridge, before you’ve even left town
Almost every route out of Stratford towards Birmingham crosses the Avon at Clopton Bridge, the town’s one significant crossing for centuries and still the pinch point for most through traffic. It queues at ordinary times of day, never mind rush hour, and it sits before the ring road, before the A46 — worth building into the timing of any appointment, not just the motorway stretch afterwards.
If you drive: the A46, M40 and M42
Once you are past Clopton Bridge, follow the A46 to the M40 at Junction 15, then the M42 to Junction 1 and the A38 into Edgbaston. Around forty-five minutes clear of the town and clear of the peaks — the route to use, and the more reliable choice for most Stratford patients even before the alternative is considered.
If you’re not driving: a taxi or a lift, not the train
The Shakespeare Line from Stratford runs roughly twice an hour to Birmingham Snow Hill and takes forty to fifty-five minutes depending on the route it takes that hour, and that is before the taxi or bus for the mile from Snow Hill to George Road. That is not a realistic way to get to a hospital appointment and back, so the straightforward recommendation is a taxi door to door, or asking a family member or friend for a lift. Either way, budget close to forty-five minutes each way — this is the longest drive of Ms Jiang’s four Warwickshire towns — and remember the lift needs to cover both the outward and the return journey, not just the drop-off.
The villages, and a trip worth planning as a round trip
Welford-on-Avon, Bidford-on-Avon and Alveston lie along the river to the south-west; Snitterfield and Ettington sit to the north-east, closer to the Warwick road. All add a little to what is already the longest of these four journeys.
You will have dilating drops at the first appointment and will not be able to drive home even if you drove yourself in. From this distance that is not a short favour, so arrange in advance for whoever drives or collects you to be free for the whole round trip, not just the outward leg.

Common questions
What happens at the first consultation?
The first appointment takes about 45 minutes and is with Ms Jiang herself, not a delegate.
- A discussion of your symptoms, your general health and what you want from your vision
- A full examination, including measurements of the eye and its focusing power
- Dilating drops, which blur your vision for a few hours
- A frank conversation about the options, including doing nothing
- A written summary sent to you and, with your consent, to your GP
Because of the dilating drops, you should not plan to drive yourself home.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
Not for a self-funded consultation — you can book directly. If you are claiming on private medical insurance, most insurers require a GP or optometrist referral before they will authorise the appointment, so check with your insurer first.
Do you accept private medical insurance?
Note that refractive lens exchange carried out to reduce dependence on glasses is generally not covered by insurance, as it is considered elective. Cataract surgery usually is.
Can I come for a second opinion?
Yes, and you are welcome to. Bring any measurements, scans or correspondence you already have. Ms Jiang is happy to review a plan made elsewhere and tell you whether she agrees with it.
