Ms Li Jiang

Professional experience

Ms Jiang is a Consultant Ophthalmologist with an interest in cornea and external eye disease, cataract, refractive surgery and primary care.

Ms Jiang graduated from the University of Birmingham Medical School with Honours in Biomedical Sciences, and went on to train in ophthalmology at the West Midlands School of Ophthalmology. After obtaining FRCOphth — Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London — she completed an advanced sub-specialty fellowship in cornea and external eye disease at the Wolverhampton Eye Infirmary. She works as a substantive Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, and was awarded CertLRS by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London, in 2024.

Ms Jiang is highly experienced in treating patients with dry eye disorders, corneal dystrophies, ocular surface inflammation and abnormal growth. She performs both standard and complex cataract and refractive surgery, with expertise in managing high refractive errors, astigmatism and presbyopia, and she also performs amniotic membrane transplantation, collagen cross-linking, pterygium surgery and corneal transplant surgery. She holds the laser refractive surgery certification awarded by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and has completed laser training with Johnson & Johnson and Zeiss.

Ms Jiang has been dedicated to medical leadership, and has been awarded the Leadership Academy Award from NHS Healthcare Leadership Foundations. Her performance in training was recognised by the Arthur Thomson Scholarship for ophthalmology training and the Duke Elder Prize. She has been deputy Clinical Service Lead of Ophthalmology at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, overseeing the running of ophthalmology across four hospitals, and Clinical Director at Newmedica Leicester.

Her research interests are in intraocular lenses and keratoconus. She has published academic papers in international journals and first-authored a medical textbook on refraction, and has been invited to present at national and international conferences. She has recently taken on the role of co-investigator for an NIHR-approved interventional study on a decellularised corneal implant.

Ms Jiang is keen to bring high quality, specialist-level ophthalmic care to patients. She feels extremely privileged to be able to help restore vision.

Teaching and examining

Ms Jiang is a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. Dedicated to supporting post-graduate medical education, she is a member of its Examination Committee and an examiner for the College.

She is College Tutor for the West Midlands Post-Graduate School of Ophthalmology, and is responsible for the ophthalmologists in training posted at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

How she works

Ms Jiang appreciates the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care. She works with fellow consultant ophthalmologists across different sub-specialties, and particularly values collaboration with regional optometrists, opticians and GPs. She believes in integrated care, which can only be achieved through collaboration between community and hospital services, with effective communication as a core element of excellent patient care.

Every patient is seen by Ms Jiang personally — at the consultation, in theatre, and at every follow-up. There is no rotation between clinicians and no delegation of the surgery to a colleague.

Consultations run to forty-five minutes, which is long enough to examine properly, explain the options and reach a decision without hurrying. Written information goes home with you, and a summary letter follows to you and, with your consent, to your GP.
